Thirty Lakes Watershed DistrictThe District was established in 1971 and is located
entirely with What is a Watershed?A watershed, or drainage basin, is the area of land from which rain and snowmelt flow and eventually enter a lake, river or wetland. Even if your home is not next to a lake, river or wetland, you still live in a watershed. Parker Boy Scout ReservationThirty Lakes Watershed District, in partnership with the
Dept. of Natural Resources, Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District
and the Master Gardeners, are working on a project to restore a shoreline at
the Parker Boy Scout Reservation on The sandy hill on the south side of the Dining Hall was eroding, as was the historic ice ridge. The project will involve creating swales and retention areas to slow down and redirect storm water runoff. Native vegetation will be used to absorb the runoff and treat is before it enters the groundwater. The finished project will not only be functional, helping keep the lake clean, but beautiful with native flowers, grasses and sedges.

Garden/Bioretention Area at Northland Arboretum. A new group has been formed “To promote Stormwater Best Management Practices through research and education. Several agencies, groups, and citizens are involved, including Thirty Lakes Watershed District. This council is encouraging the installation of rain gardens, rain barrels and shoreland buffers, as means of controlling stormwater runoff. Drop, Stop, Absorb. No matter where you live, what you do can affect the quality of the lakes, wetlands, and ground water. Rain Barrels are rain water banks where you can store water for a dry day and use to water the plants in your landscape. Shoreland Buffers help protect water quality by slowing
runoff, reducing erosion, and filtering nutrients that can cause excessive
aquatic vegetation and algal blooms.
They add beauty and diversity to the landscape, attract wildlife and
can deter nuisance species like

Projects Are you planning or starting work on such things as: · Any structure to be built; located or relocated on any property within the District. · Dredging or filling of any lowland, marsh, pond, wetland or drainage-way. · Drainage of any marsh, pond or wetland. · Any land alterations which remove surface vegetation from more than one acre. · Any work on a lake lot which removes or alters an ice ridge. · For the complete list, please call 218-828-0243 If you are doing
any of these activities or other activities you must apply for and receive a
permit from Thirty Lakes Watershed District. Thirty Lakes Watershed District and A.W. Research
Laboratories have continued a Precipitation Study which began in 2006. During the first year, the Sauk River
Watershed District and the Red River Watershed District also participated and
collected precipitation samples. The
findings not only revealed that precipitation brings a considerable loading
of Phosphorus, but that the atmospheric level and origin of the weather
system can determine the amount of the phosphorus load. For a copy of this
study please call Thirty Lakes Watershed District at 218-8282-0243 or stop by
at our office at The National Association of Lake Management Society
(NALMS) had a conference in Another similar presentation was made at the Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts (MAWD) conference in November at the Alexandria Arrowwood Resort. In addition, Thirty Lakes Watershed District also had a presentation on the subject of ArcView 9, and the process of keeping files, photos and other data all connected to each individual parcel. Thirty
Lakes Watershed District is actively recruiting members to serve on its
Citizen Advisory Committee. Members of
this volunteer committee provide an objective point of view and comment to
the Board of Managers on projects and activities of the District. The committee will have three official
meetings each year and attend meetings of the Board of Managers when
possible. If
you are interested in serving on this important committee, please contact On April 22, 2008, Thirty Lakes Watershed District, along with several other earth-friendly groups, put together an event for the community. It was held at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd. There are several ways for everyone to help with taking care of the earth. Rain Gardens, Rain Barrels, Shoreland Buffers, Pervious Concrete and Asphalt, Using earth-friendly products, and Recycling, just to name a few. Some of the groups that contributed are; AW Research Lab, Crow Wing SWCD, U of MN Extension Ofc, Master Gardeners, MPCA, and several others. Thank you to all who participated. Hopefully we will have an even greater turn out next year.
