Thirty Lakes Watershed District

The District was established in 1971 and is located entirely with Crow Wing County.  There are 53 lakes and wetlands within the district. It was the thirtieth District to be created in Minnesota, hence the name Thirty Lakes.  The District covers 70 square miles and 60% of that area is covered by surface water.

What is a Watershed?

A watershed, or drainage basin, is the area of land from which rain and snowmelt flow and eventually enter a lake, river or wetland.  Even if your home is not next to a lake, river or wetland, you still live in a watershed.

Parker Boy Scout Reservation

Thirty Lakes Watershed District, in partnership with the Dept. of Natural Resources, Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District and the Master Gardeners, are working on a project to restore a shoreline at the Parker Boy Scout Reservation on North Long Lake.

The sandy hill on the south side of the Dining Hall was eroding, as was the historic ice ridge.  The project will involve creating swales and retention areas to slow down and redirect storm water runoff.  Native vegetation will be used to absorb the runoff and treat is before it enters the groundwater.

The finished project will not only be functional, helping keep the lake clean, but beautiful with native flowers, grasses and sedges.

Pelican Lake Stormwater Project

Rain Garden

Thirty Lakes Watershed District continues to work on this stormwater management project within the Breezy Point Resort.  Recently a Conservation Engineer submitted a plan to control the “first flush” of storm water through a series of swales and bioretention areas.  These bioretention areas will be planted with native shrubs, grasses and flowers that will be functional and beautiful.

Lakes Area Clean Waters Council – www.dropstopabsorb.org

A new group has been formed “To promote Stormwater Best Management Practices through research and education. Several agencies, groups, and citizens are involved, including Thirty Lakes Watershed District.  This council is encouraging the installation of rain gardens, rain barrels and shoreland buffers, as means of controlling stormwater runoff. Drop, Stop, Absorb.

No matter where you live, what you do can affect the quality of the lakes, wetlands, and ground water.

Rain Gardens are designed to collect snowmelt, rainwater runoff, absorb it and filter it before it enters the ground.

Rain Barrels are rain water banks where you can store water for a dry day and use to water the plants in your landscape.

Shoreland Buffers help protect water quality by slowing runoff, reducing erosion, and filtering nutrients that can cause excessive aquatic vegetation and algal blooms.  They add beauty and diversity to the landscape, attract wildlife and can deter nuisance species like Canada geese.

Do You Have An Idea for a Project?

Rain Garden

Thirty Lakes Watershed District is accepting proposals for projects that will reduce and treat stormwater runoff or improve the quality of lake and ground water.

If you would like us to consider your project for cost-share funding, submit a brief summary and estimated budget to:

Precipitation Study

Thirty Lakes Watershed District and A.W. Research Laboratories have continued a Precipitation Study which began in 2006.  During the first year, the Sauk River Watershed District and the Red River Watershed District also participated and collected precipitation samples.  The findings not only revealed that precipitation brings a considerable loading of Phosphorus, but that the atmospheric level and origin of the weather system can determine the amount of the phosphorus load. For a copy of this study please call Thirty Lakes Watershed District at 218-8282-0243 or stop by at our office at 17064 Commercial Park Rd, Brainerd, MN.

MAWD and NALMS

The National Association of Lake Management Society (NALMS) had a conference in Orlando Florida in October of 2007.  Two of the Thirty Lakes Watershed District Managers and A.W. Research Laboratories traveled to make a presentation of the Precipitation Study.

Another similar presentation was made at the Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts (MAWD) conference in November at the Alexandria Arrowwood Resort.  In addition, Thirty Lakes Watershed District also had a presentation on the subject of ArcView 9, and the process of keeping files, photos and other data all connected to each individual parcel.

Citizen Advisory Committee

Thirty Lakes Watershed District is actively recruiting members to serve on its Citizen Advisory Committee.  Members of this volunteer committee provide an objective point of view and comment to the Board of Managers on projects and activities of the District.  The committee will have three official meetings each year and attend meetings of the Board of Managers when possible.

If you are interested in serving on this important committee, please contact Marty Peisch, Watershed Administrator at 218-828-0243

Earth Day Event

On April 22, 2008, Thirty Lakes Watershed District, along with several other earth-friendly groups, put together an event for the community.  It was held at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd.  There are several ways for everyone to help with taking care of the earth. Rain Gardens, Rain Barrels, Shoreland Buffers, Pervious Concrete and Asphalt, Using earth-friendly products, and Recycling, just to name a few.  Some of the groups that contributed are; AW Research Lab, Crow Wing SWCD, U of MN Extension Ofc, Master Gardeners, MPCA, and several others. Thank you to all who participated.  Hopefully we will have an even greater turn out next year.
